Underneath almost every question I get about sizing, coverage or support, there is one real worry: will this actually stay on? Nobody wants to think about their bikini while they are diving under a wave or getting up off a Pilates mat. So let's talk about what actually keeps swimwear in place, because it is rarely what people expect.
Why most bikinis fail in the water
In my experience, it almost never comes down to bad luck. It comes down to one of three things: the size was wrong to begin with, the fabric was too thin or too loose to hold its shape once wet, or the construction (thin straps, single lining, flimsy ties) was never built for actual movement in the first place. A bikini designed to look good standing still on the sand is a very different product to one designed to move with you through the water.
What actually keeps a bikini on
Three things, in order of importance:
- The right size. This is always step one. No amount of clever design fixes a size that is fighting against your body. If you are unsure, our sizing FAQ walks through exactly what to do, including what to do between sizes.
- Double lining and proper seaming. Every Amali piece is seamless and double lined, which is what gives the fabric structure and support rather than it just being a single layer of stretch fabric that shifts as you move.
- Straps and ties built for tension. Wide, supportive straps (like on the Ozoux Top and Payton Top) hold their shape under real movement, while adjustable ties (like on the Marie Bottom and Bloom Bottom) let you set the tension yourself so it does not loosen over the course of a swim.
Getting your size right does more for how a bikini stays on than anything else you can control.
Choosing your style for the activity
If you are swimming laps, doing an ocean swim, or spending the day active, I would lean toward a full-coverage, short-style bottom like the Ozoux Shorts, paired with a scoop-neck or halter top for support. If you want a little more flexibility to adjust throughout the day, a tie-side style gives you that control. Either way, sizing correctly first is what makes the biggest difference, more than the style you choose.
The Amali standard
Every piece I design gets tested the same way I test it for myself: in the ocean, at Pilates, and on an actual day at the beach, not just on a hanger. That is the whole point of building swimwear that is reversible and active. It should be something you can genuinely forget you are wearing.
